Having a Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) is a legal requirement under the Environment Act 2021. Their aim is to help reverse the decline of nature by identifying the best places to protect, restore and connect habitats across England. Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is one of 48 responsible authorities identified by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to lead on the preparation of an LNRS. WCC has worked with local councils, landowners, environmental groups and others to prepare the LNRS for Warwickshire. Stratford-on-Avon District Council (SDC) as a Supporting Authority, has helped to review and shape the strategy, support engagement, and align local actions to aid nature recovery.

The Warwickshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy has been formally acknowledged by the secretary of state and on Monday 7th September 2026 The Cabinet recognised the strategy and agreed to use it as a material planning consideration. It should also be acknowledged that the NPPF (August 2026) requires Local Authorities to 'take account' of Local Nature Recovery Strategies in plan making and decision-making.
