Enhancing Our High Streets

Applications open 9.00am, 7th September 2026 and close 5th October 2026

The Shop Front Improvement Grant programme supports local businesses to improve the appearance of their premises and contribute to attractive, vibrant town centres across the district.

Grants are available to eligible businesses (20% of qualifying capital costs, to a maximum of £5000) seeking to enhance the external appearance of their commercial property through high-quality improvements that respect and strengthen the character of the local area.

By investing in shop fronts, signage and building frontages, we aim to help businesses create welcoming environments, increase footfall and support the long-term vitality of our town centres.

What Can the Grant Be Used For?

Funding may be available for projects such as:

Refurbishment or restoration of shop fronts
Replacement of inappropriate or poor-quality signage (subject to approval)
Installation of traditional or heritage-style features
Improvements to windows, doors and external frontages
Accessibility enhancements to business entrances
Repairs and redecoration of visible street-facing elevations

All proposals should contribute positively to the appearance and character of the local high street.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants may be eligible if they:

Operate from a commercial property within an eligible town centre or designated area
Have the necessary permissions to undertake the proposed works (Planning, Licencing, Landlord approval, etc.)
Can demonstrate how the project will improve the appearance of their premises
Meet the scheme's terms and conditions (see below)

Priority may be given to projects that seek to restore original features, deliver the greatest visual impact ,and support wider regeneration objectives.

Before You Apply

Please note:

Grants cannot be awarded retrospectively.
Planning permission, advertisement consent or listed building consent may be required for some projects.
Approval of a grant does not remove any requirement to obtain the necessary statutory & legal permissions.
