Stratford-on-Avon District Council has successfully secured funding to move a project for a District Heating Network for the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal Quarter to the Detailed Project Development Stage.

£158,500 has been secured following an application to BEIS Heat Networks Delivery Unit (HNDU) towards the end of last year. The bid included funding to carry out the project as well as a Project Manager to oversee the project on behalf of the District Council.

A District Heating network involves heating being supplied from a local decentralised source directly to homes and businesses through a network of pipeline carrying hot water. It can reduce carbon emissions and benefits residents and businesses through cheaper heating and greater security of supply.

A feasibility study on the Canal Quarter carried out by the District Council in December 2018 concluded that a heat network was viable and feasible at the Canal Quarter.

Cllr Daren Pemberton, Deputy Leader and Place Portfolio at Stratford-on-Avon District Council says: "Following the Climate Change emergency declared by the Council in 2019, District Heating plays an important part in contributing towards reducing carbon emissions in the district.

"Despite the difficulties we are all currently facing, this is good news for the district as the even bigger challenge will be to rebuild the economy in the aftermath of COVID-19. In doing so, we mustn't forget that moving to zero carbon should be seen as an opportunity and the right thing to do.

"Whilst the timescales for progressing this project are somewhat uncertain given the other priorities the Council is focussing on right now, I am delighted that the project at the Canal Quarter can be taken to the next stage of development following the announcement that funding has been secured from BEIS Heat Network Delivery Unit."

The next stage will be to commission a Project Manager, which is hoping to go out to tender later this year.

Stratford-on-Avon District Council will also be contributing £50,000 towards this project.
