Nominations for Welford-on-Avon by-election

Nominations closed at 4pm today, Friday 14 February, for the by-election for the Welford-on-Avon ward in Stratford-on-Avon District.

The nominations are as follows:

  • Neal Appleton - Independent
  • Richard Cox - The Conservative Party Candidate
  • Anthony Kent - Labour Party
  • Manuela Perteghella - Liberal Democrats
  • John Stott - Green Party


The electorate for the Welford-on-Avon ward is 3377.

Turnout for the last contested election at Welford-on-Avon in May 2019 was 44.7%.

The by-election will take place on Thursday 12 March 2020 with polling stations, open from 7am to 10pm at:

  • Jubilee Hall, Clifford Chambers,
  • Welford and Weston Memorial Hall, Welford-on-Avon,
  • Long Marston Village Hall, Meon Vale
  • Village Hall, Luddington Village Hall


Counting will take place after close of polls at Welford and Weston Memorial Hall, Welford-on-Avon.

The result will be posted on the District Council website and posted on Twitter @SDCElects.


The by-election follows the sad and unexpected death of Cllr Peter Barnes (Independent) in January.

Present standings on the District Council are:

  • 1 vacancy (Welford-on-Avon by-election)
  • Conservatives - 19 seats
  • Liberal Democrats - 11 seats
  • Independent - 4 seats
  • Green - 1 seat
