Stratford-on-Avon District Council is committed to keeping the district as litter-free as possible.

Litter includes food and small items such as cigarette ends and chewing gum, as well as larger items such as bags of food waste and drinks containers.

What we do

  • clear litter from public highways and open spaces that we are responsible for
  • remove fly tips from public highways
  • investigate and prosecute people who drop litter or dump rubbish
  • maintain and empty litter bins and dog waste bins
  • work with private land owners where there is a litter problem
  • work with businesses, schools and other organisations to encourage a responsible attitude to litter prevention
  • where practicable, undertake surveillance in areas where fly tipping is a regular occurrence
  • work with community groups to assist with local clean ups
  • issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) for litter offences
  • consider the use of legislation for 'Prescribed Premises' (those that have been identified by the Secretary of State as having the potential to be a source of a litter problem, including food and drink outlets, petrol stations, leisure centres, premises with a cash point and premises selling lottery tickets)

What we don't do

  • clear litter from privately owned land
  • clear litter from or investigate complaints relating to any area outside of our district

If privately owned land not accessible by the public is affected by litter or fly tipping that causes a nuisance or an environmental health issue, we may take action under other legislation against the land owner to get the material removed.

Dropping litter is an offence

Dropping or leaving litter is an offence. This includes litter thrown or dropped out of a car (including cigarette ends). Anyone dropping litter may be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £75 or may be prosecuted in court and fined up to £2,500.

Community events

If you would like to hold a litter picking / clean-up event to help improve your local environment, please let us know as we may be able to provide advice and support.

If you contact us before the event, we may be able to provide you with sacks, gloves and litter picking sticks to use at the event. We may also be able to arrange to collect the sacks of litter after you have finished.

More details of guidance on community litter picks / clean-ups is available from Keep Britain Tidy.
