Litter Picking and Channel Sweeping

As well as being unsightly and a potential hazard to human and animal health, it costs Stratford-on-Avon District Council a lot of money to clear up litter.

Deliberately dropping litter is an environmental crime. Council officers are authorised to issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) for littering.

Litter Picking

Stratford-on-Avon District Council, in partnership with its contractor Biffa Waste Services Limited, provides a litter picking service throughout the year to ensure high environmental standards are maintained. Every road, road side pavement and verge in the District is cleared of litter at least once every eight weeks. Town centres, areas of high usage and 'hot spots' are cleaned more often.

Channel Sweeping

Stratford-on-Avon District Council, in partnership with its contractor Biffa Waste Services Limited, provides a channel sweeping service. All roads in the District with a kerb are swept at least four times a year to remove detritus and debris.

Community Events

If you are organising an event to keep our District litter-free, either as a litter clean-up group, business, school or on your own, we can provide support by loaning equipment such as litter picking sticks and graffiti removal kits. We can also provide refuse and recycling sacks and disposable gloves. We may also be able to arrange for any litter collected during the event to be removed.

The Great British Spring Clean: 13th - 29th March 2026

Stratford-on-Avon District Council is proud to support the Great British Spring Clean 2026, the nation's largest mass action environmental campaign. This annual initiative led by Keep Britain Tidy brings together individuals, community groups, and organisations across the country to help create cleaner, greener and safer places to live.

With millions of bags of litter pledged and hundreds of thousands of volunteers taking part nationwide each year, the Great British Spring Clean demonstrates the power of small individual actions adding up to a truly national impact. The Council is committed to supporting local volunteers, community groups and schools in taking part and showing pride in our beautiful district.

We encourage residents to get involved - whether by pledging to pick a bag of litter, organising a local clean up, or simply spreading the word. Together, we can make a real and lasting difference to our streets, parks and green spaces.

Join us in celebrating community spirit and helping to keep Stratford-on-Avon District clean, safe and thriving for everyone.

More details on community litter picks / clean-ups is available from Keep Britain Tidy.
