Volunteers' Week is an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the contribution of volunteers across the UK.

This year's Volunteers' week runs from 1 to 7 June and is a time to say thanks for the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering.

Stratford-on-Avon District Council recognises the fantastic contribution made by volunteers across the district in supporting local residents, from local support groups and neighbour networks, parish and town councils and local charities.

The last year was an exceptional year with local support groups establishing quickly at the beginning of the pandemic to provide support across their communities, with wide ranging assistance including shopping, prescriptions delivery, dog walking, telephone support services, providing a lifeline to many residents across the rural geography of the district.

Councillor Jo Barker, Homes, Health and Wellbeing Portfolio at Stratford District Council, volunteers for Shipston-on-Stour foodbank and said: "Volunteers are an invaluable asset across our communities providing their time freely to assist the needs of others, helping to build resilience. Each contribution has such a positive impact across the local community and it is important to acknowledge and celebrate this."

The District Council provides a staff volunteer scheme - Marie Darwen, Older Peoples Officer and Carol Roberts, Social Inclusion Officer both volunteer for local charities.

Marie is a Trustee for Warwickshire Reminiscence Action Project - supporting people looking after a loved ones living with dementia. While, Carol is Chair of Trustees for Springfield Mind - promoting wellbeing and preventing mental health problems in Warwickshire & Worcestershire.

From January 2019 to May 2021, six members of staff at the District Council volunteered a total of 288 hours.

Volunteering can also be beneficial to the mental health of individuals enabling new connections and learning opportunities.

Each year, Warwickshire Community and Voluntary Action (WCAVA) celebrate the achievements of volunteers across South Warwickshire. This year they will be holding a 'virtual celebration of volunteering during the pandemic' on 13th July and are seeking nominations from organisations and the community, for outstanding individual volunteer achievements and outstanding volunteer team achievements.
