Apprentices and Youth Training Trainees

Council Tax is normally charged on the assumption that two or more people aged 18 or over live in a property. If there is only one adult living there, they can apply for a single occupier discount of 25%.

However, if anyone aged 18 or over is an apprentice or is training under the youth training scheme, and without them there is only one adult living in a property, you may apply for a 25% discount.

If there are only apprentices and trainees at a property there is a 50% discount.

Apprentices

A person is an apprentice on a particular day if, on that day, he/she is:

  • employed for the purpose of learning a trade, business, profession or vocation
  • undertaking a programme of training leading to an accredited qualification; and
  • employed at a salary or in receipt of an allowance or both, which are, in total no more than £195 per week.

Youth Training Trainee

A person is a youth training trainee on a particular day if, on that day he/she is:

  • under the age of 25; and
  • undertaking training through arrangements made under section 2 of the Employment and Training Act 1973 and which is funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency

If you wish to apply for either of these, please contact the council on the number below. We will request a letter from your employer or from the organisation that is running the youth training scheme to confirm the above information.
