Stratford-on-Avon District Council rates second best in Warwickshire for Climate Action

Stratford-on-Avon District Council has ranked second best for climate action in Warwickshire.  

Climate Emergency UK has assessed all UK councils on the actions they have taken towards net zero. The 2025 Action Scorecard assessment (District Councils' Climate Action Scorecards | Climate Emergency UK) consists of 93 questions or less, depending on council type, across 7 different sections, created in consultation with over 90 different organisations and individuals.  

In 2025 SDC scored 42% overall. This is a 12% improvement from the 2023 score and the District Council rose by 12 places in 2025, compared to 2023. This is 7% above the national average in 2025.    

Stratford District Council demonstrated improvements in the following areas (when compared with 2023 figures):

  • Rose by 21 places in buildings and heating. 
  • Rose by 11 places in planning and land use.
  • Rose by 18 places in biodiversity.
  • Rose by 21 places in collaboration and engagement.
  • Rose by 19 places in waste reduction and food.  

Cllr Susan Juned, Leader of Stratford-on-Avon District Council, said: "Stratford-on-Avon District Council is committed to addressing climate change and acknowledges the benefits that come from doing so. We are pleased to see the progress we have made being recognised and look forward to even better results next year, when our current projects come to fruition."

Some highlights of progress achieved so far this year include: 

  • April 2024: We allocated over £44,000 in grant funding to support community based green initiatives across the District, with a further £56,000 remaining in reserves to support similar initiatives in the future.
  • June 2024: We committed £35,000 to support the second round of the Free Trees for Farmers scheme.
  • February 2025: Adopted a Climate Change and Nature Recovery Strategy
  • March 2025: We have completed the second round of the Community Climate and Nature Fund, and 13 projects were successful. £56,000 was distributed in total.
  • March 2025: Installed solar panels on Shipston and Stratford leisure centres.
  • May 2025: Relaunched the LCE programme, and have a showcase event planned for October
  • May 2025: Opened round three of the Community Climate and Nature Fund, with £150,000 of funding being available for the 25/26 financial year.
  • June 2025: Secured £20,000 for the delivery of the "Wilder Communities" project in collaboration with the Wildlife Trust. 
  • June 2025: Secured a further £35,000 for the delivery of the third round of the Free Trees for Farmers scheme.
