Cabinet approves £250,000 investment in future of Southam United Football Club

Published on 2 November 2026

Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Cabinet has today, Monday 2 November approved funding of up to £250,000 to help secure the long-term future of Southam United Football Club.

The funding is to complete the community clubhouse facilities at Bobby Hancocks Park, creating a fully functioning community facility that can support the football club's long-term sustainability while providing a valuable venue for wider community use.

Southam United Football Club, founded in 1905, currently provides football opportunities for around 150 players and runs 19 teams ranging from under-5s to senior level. The club has identified potential for further growth, including expanding opportunities for girls' football and players with disabilities.

The club relocated to Bobby Hancocks Park as part of a redevelopment project approved in 2014. While the clubhouse reached practical completion, key parts of the first floor remain unfinished, including heating, kitchen and toilet facilities, limiting its use as a community venue and restricting the club's ability to generate income.

The works required to complete the facility are estimated to cost around £350,000, with a funding gap of approximately £250,000.

The District Council's grant is subject to a number of conditions, including the development of a detailed business plan, continued engagement with Birmingham County FA, exploration of external grant funding opportunities, and arrangements to safeguard public investment.

The level of Council funding will reduce if significant additional grant funding is secured from other sources.

Councillor Lorraine Grocott, Environmental and Neighbourhood Services Portfolio Holder, said: "Southam United Football Club has been at the heart of the local community for more than a century, providing opportunities for people of all ages to get active, develop new skills and enjoy the benefits that sport brings.

"By supporting the completion of these facilities, we are helping to secure the future of the club, protect an important community asset and create greater opportunities for residents to take part in sport and community activities for many years to come."

The District Council has been working closely with Southam United Football Club and Birmingham County FA to explore options for securing the club's future. Alongside the District Council's funding, the club will continue to pursue external grant opportunities and implement recommendations arising from a Club Development Review designed to strengthen governance, sustainability and future growth.

The Council's approved grant is for up to £250,000 and is subject to a number of conditions being met - Future of Southam United Football Club Report

The funding will be drawn from the Council's Business Rates Equalisation Reserve.
