In 2019, the Council declared a Climate Emergency. In 2024, the Council declared an Ecological Emergency. Since these declarations, significant levels of work have been undertaken to deliver environmental initiatives both within the Council, and across the wider District.
The Climate Change and Nature Recovery Strategy 2024-2029 and 2025 Delivery Plan were adopted by The Cabinet on 10 February 2025.
This new Strategy represents a commitment to continuous improvement. It builds upon the successes of the previous plan, incorporating lessons learned and integrating new knowledge to enhance our ambition and effectiveness.
To demonstrate our progress against the Climate Change and Nature Recovery Strategy 2024-2029, we produced a 2026 Climate Change and Nature Recovery Progress report, which was overviewed and signed off by The Cabinet on the 13th April 2026. The 2026 Delivery Plan was also approved and adopted at the same meeting, which outlines our objectives over the next 12 months. A progress report and delivery plan will be produced every year to showcase our progress to the councillors and to the public.
