Selling/Letting and Renovating

Many owners choose not to live in their empty properties and prefer to generate a regular income by renting them out, whilst others prefer to renovate their properties and sell them on.

Further advice and information on the options available can be found below:

If you decide to sell or let your property, you should seek the advice and guidance of a reputable estate/lettings agent. They will provide you with help and guidance on how to market your property effectively to achieve the best possible price. It is recommended that you contact a number of agents to compare the costs and level of service they can offer, which will enable you to make an informed decision on the best option for you.

If you decide to renovate your empty property, you may be entitled to a reduction on the VAT and/or a discount on your Council Tax.

The reduction rate and discount depends on the length of time your property has been empty and the level of works required.

For information on VAT reductions, please visit the GOV.UK website. For information on Council Tax discounts and exemptions, please see Discounts and Exemptions.

If you are planning to undertake major works to your property, you may need to check if you require planning permission and it is recommended that you contact Planning and Building Control to discuss your proposed works.
