Legionnaires' disease is one of a group of pneumonia-like illnesses collectively known as legionellosis. Most reported cases have been in people aged between 40 and 70; men are more likely to be affected than women.
Owners of premises using wet cooling towers and/or evaporative condensers must notify the district council that they have this equipment. Notification enables environmental health officers to carry out proactive inspections and provides vital information in the event of an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease.
