Summary of Terms and Conditions of Employment

Working Hours

Our standard full time hours are 08:45 - 17:15, Monday to Wednesday and 08:45 - 17:00, Thursday and Friday.

However, we operate a flexi-time scheme that provides you with flexibility over start and finish times, subject to the needs of the business.

Annual Leave

Your leave entitlement will be a basic 23 working days in a full leave year (pro rata for part time staff). Your leave year will begin the month you commence employment. (The minimum leave entitlement of officers who, immediately prior to the commencement of the leave year, have had not less than five years' continuous service under one or more local authorities, is 27 days.) As from 1 April 1986, additional annual leave will be granted on the following basis:

  • After five years' continuous service, four extra days
  • After 10 years' continuous service, one extra day
  • After 15 years' continuous service, one further extra day
  • After 20 years' continuous service, one further extra day

As well as annual leave entitlement there are eight days which are Bank Holidays. On top of these days, the council grants three extra statutory days during the Christmas period.

Probation Period

All new employees are subject to the satisfactory completion of a six month probation period (including those from another Public Authority).

Notice Periods

The first six months of your employment with us will be a probationary period. During this time, employment may be terminated by one week's written notice from either side after following the relevant procedure.

Following satisfactory completion of the probationary period, the minimum periods of notice to which you are entitled are:

Period of Continuous Employment - Minimum Notice

  • Four weeks or more, but less than two years - one week
  • Two years or more, but less than 12 years - one week for each year of continuous employment
  • 12 years or more - 12 weeks

The period of notice of termination of your employment, which you are required to give, is not less than four weeks for Grade M to H, and not less than eight weeks for Grade G to A.
