Stratford-on-Avon District Council operates a highly acclaimed CCTV system covering the major towns and villages in south Warwickshire and it is now expanding this successful scheme further.
The District Council, aided by Government grants, has spent nearly £100,000 on installing three cameras around Wellesbourne; upgrading an existing camera for the High Street in Bidford and has invested in a new camera at the Recreation Ground in Stratford overlooking the children's play area.
Although Stratford-on-Avon District has one of the lowest crime rates in the country, residents are still concerned about crime and anti-social behaviour.
One key aim of Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Corporate Strategy is the development of safer and healthier communities. Residents have indicated that they want the level of crime reduced. The District Council has responded by improving and increasing CCTV coverage and working closely with partners to reduce overall crime.
"Most people have a fear of crime and to overcome this perception CCTV has been introduced throughout the district to provide support for our communities and to help the Police," said Cllr Chris Williams, Portfolio Holder for Community Services.
"As well as preventing criminal activity, having actual footage of illegal acts, which do occur, has proved invaluable towards greater detection rates of crime in our district.
"Our CCTV system is already successful in helping to prevent crime in the community by acting as a deterrent. We are sure we will be equally successful with the new and updated cameras in Wellesbourne, Bidford and Stratford."
