Fancy trying your hand a woodcarving?  Artist Will Glanfield has been appointed by Vision4Southam to create a landmark sculpture in Oak, to be sited outside the Library in Southam. Set into the sculpture will be thirty round woodcarvings from local people, exploring stories connected to the life and people of Southam.

Adults from Southam, 16yrs and older are invited to create nine woodcarvings in a workshop session led by Will.  The workshops will take place at Southam College on:

  • Friday 26th January 2007 - 3.45pm - 7pm (4 places)
  • Saturday 27th January 2007 - 11am - 4pm (5 places)

Workshop sessions are free of charge and materials and tools will be available. For further information or to book a place please contact Will Glanfield on 01227 273511 or Janet Cox, Vision 4 Southam on 01926 814985. Places given on a first come first served basis!

The wood carvings can relate to any story in the life of the town. They can be seemingly insignificant, or very personal; stories passed down over generations, or things which happened yesterday. They can be recollections of large community events, or a solitary episode. They can be ordinary or extraordinary; daft or ridiculous; tragic or poignant. Whatever the story, if you are happy to share it, and would like to try your hand at woodcarving, come along.

Will has worked with nearly 100 pupils from Southam College and the three Primary Schools - St James, St Mary's and Southam Primary and the pupils have designed and created 21 carvings.

It is also hoped that a colour book will be published later showing all the carvings, and a selection of artworks and stories.

Vision 4 Southam is a group of local volunteers comprising residents, the business community and local organisations, who are interested in shaping the town of Southam and its surrounding rural area and is supported by Stratford-on-Avon District Council.
