Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Cabinet has agreed to support much-needed affordable homes in Shipston-on-Stour.

The Cabinet has approved a grant of just over £520,000 to support a scheme to provide 26 affordable homes for local people on land off London Road, Shipston-on-Stour.

A legally-binding agreement will ensure that the homes are lived in only by people with a local connection to Shipston-on-Stour.

"There is a substantial unmet housing need in Shipston and the site off London Road, which has been subject to extensive community consultation will provide an opportunity to help address local housing needs," says Cllr Stephen Gray, Revenues & Housing Portfolio Holder.

"The District Council and Warwickshire Rural Housing Association have been working closely with the local community to bring about affordable housing in the Shipston area and this is just the first step of achieving one of the District Council's Corporate Strategy aims of providing 'more housing at a price local people can afford'.   It is a crucial one in terms of agreeing the funding but will still be subject to a planning application."

The total cost of the scheme is just under £3.8 million.  The District Council's grant will therefore cover 14.1% of the cost, with the remaining costs expected to be met by the Housing Association's own funds and grants from the Housing Corporation.

The Cabinet meeting took place on Monday 29 September and the decision is still subject to a 5-day call-in period for scrutiny purposes.
