Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Cabinet met on Monday 27 October to agree a strategy for the future development of the District Council's Parking Services.

The aim is to create a coherent car parking strategy for the district in order to - reduce congestion and environmental damage while supporting the local economy and at least maintaining the Council's financial position.

"This was all about the strategic direction to take the Council's Parking Service.  It was not about introducing car parking charges as there were a number of options to consider - charging was just one of those.  It was all about providing communality and making it easier for motorists to understand.  It was never intended to be a stealth tax," says Cllr Williams, Community Services Portfolio Holder.

"Each area of the District is different and we have to realise one size does not fit all, so it's all about determining which action to implement in each area where they differ.  Parking is a high profile service which most residents have an opinion about.  The District Council is only responsible for part of the service and must work in partnership with Warwickshire County Council.

"This report is looking at the future direction and the bigger picture, rather than just the here and now, it will shape the future of parking services in the District.  There is a fine balancing act to get the best results all round.  The District Council offers many concessions and the season tickets represent good value for money - offering parking in Stratford for just £2 a day.  Where else can you park for that price in a high profile tourist destination?  It's all about balancing competing demands and getting the best possible solution all round, car parking needs to be available for shoppers and the local business community alike."

Key Recommendations from the Parking Strategy:
* No charges to be introduced to car parks outside of Stratford town.
* Reclassification of Stratford town centre car parks with clear signage to indicate whether they are short or long stay.
* Maximum stay of short stay car parks will be 4hours.
* Car parking charges in Stratford-upon-Avon increased by only 1%.
