Monday 6 April sees the start of the complete refuse and recycling service from Stratford-on-Avon District Council.

The District Council is still maintaining a weekly kitchen waste disposal service, but with a twist, as kitchen waste is mixed with green garden waste in the green bin, despite the grey bin being collected every other week*.

Collection days remain the same and the only Bank Holiday where collections will change is the period between Christmas and New Year and all residents have been issued with a Collection Calendar through to March 2010 with other information associated with the service.

A reminder of what you can put in the bins:

The Blue Lid Bin for:

  • Dry recycling including paper, mixed glass, food tins and drink cans, cardboard, plastic bottles and cartons

The Grey bin for:

  • Household waste and
  • Kitchen waste
Any waste you put in this bin can be contained in plastic sacks

The Green Bin for:

  • Garden waste including grass cuttings, small branches, plants and weeds
  • Kitchen waste including vegetable peelings, fruit, food scraps, meat and fish including skin and fat, bones, cereals and grains

When you place kitchen waste in your green bin it will all be composted, so please dont wrap them in plastic; place it loose in your Green Bin with your garden waste or you can wrap your food waste in any sort of paper such as kitchen towel, newspapers or junk mail but you can also use compostable bags.  Compostable bags are available to buy from local supermarkets and many websites selling green products also stock these bags.

The most commonly used compostable bags should have the number EN-13432 and the compostable logo.  Biodegradable or degradable bags cannot be used only compostable bags.  Please do not use any plastic bags in your green bin; as your bin will not be emptied.

A maximum of two Green Bins will be collected from your property and a chargeable service is available at £40 a year for the collection of each additional bin.  Please contact 01789 260925 for more details or to book this service.

The whole concept behind the introduction of this new service was to decrease the use of landfill, increase recycling and composting and provide better value for money, says Councillor Simon Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Environment.

Since the new service started in August last year the dry recycling has increased by 64.8% compared to the same period the previous year and this is thanks to our residents who have embraced the new service and proved that given the chance they will recycle more.  Residents have told us they wished to recycle more and we have given them that chance with the introduction of the new service and the additional materials now being recycled.

  • *Kitchen waste will be collected every week, one week in with your general waste in your grey bin, and the next week with your green garden waste in your green bin.
  • Composting food waste instead of sending it to landfill will help reduce the District residents carbon and methane footprint.
  • No change to collection days during Easter holidays.
