Stratford-on-Avon District Council has owned Pathlow Gypsy site for 25 years.  Last year the District Council was granted £1.2m by Central Government to provide modern amenity blocks for the 30 resident families.

The complete contract was awarded to local firm Weavers PLC and work began at the beginning of June.  The improvements to the site focus on the new amenity blocks, which have a kitchen and bathroom for each plot.

The new blocks include energy saving measures such as solar heating panels and are being constructed off site, and delivered to site completed, to ensure that the refurbishment has the least impact on the environment and for residents.

The first blocks have been completed and the residents are delighted with the new facilities which are a vast improvement to the previous blocks.

Mrs G, a resident said: I have lived here for 16 years and like living here for the beautiful views of the open countryside and the peace and quiet.  The Council has done a marvellous job with the sheds (amenity blocks) and officers have been very good and helpful.  The improvements will definitely help the community in the future and make us have a sense of belonging.

It is anticipated that the work will continue until August 2010.

" The total cost of the refurbishment is £1.4m made up of a £1.2m grant from Communities and Local Government  and the rest from Stratford-on-Avon District Council.
" Pathlow Gypsy site was previously owned and managed by Warwickshire County Council.
