Free swimming a success across Stratford District

Over 28,000 free swimming sessions have been taken up during the last twelve months. Any one over 60 years old can now access 216 hours per week of 'swim for all sessions' across the four District Council Leisure Centres.

The initiative started on 1st April 2009 and is funded for two years until March 2011. The programme is a partnership between Government and Stratford-on-Avon District Council, and aims to promote healthier and more active lifestyles for older adults.

The free swimming for the over 60's initiative is part of a national campaign to promote swimming, general fitness, more active lifestyles and well-being. In all four leisure centres the initiative is being promoted by Stratford District Council in partnership with Sport and Leisure Management Ltd (SLM) - who manage the council-owned leisure centres in Stratford, Shipston, Southam and Studley on behalf of the District Council.

Councillor Mike Brain Community Services Portfolio Holder says: "Swimming is an excellent sport for all-round fitness and well-being. Offering free swimming is a measure of our commitment to making a difference to people's lives."

To take up the free swim offer, everyone must have a valid Everyone Active activity card. The cards are free and are available from all the Leisure Centres. To get your free Everyone Active card either register at www.everyoneactive.com or visit your local swimming pool or leisure centre and collect and Everyone Active card application form.

Public swim sessions vary from pool to pool and people are advised to check beforehand at your local pool or centre of visit www.everyoneactive.com and download the swimming pool timetable.
