Our Commitment
We are committed to:
- Reducing waste that goes to landfill and
- Increasing the proportion of waste that is recyced or composted.
Currently, 58.6% of household waste we collect is recycled or composted (2009/10 figures). According to provisional figures from LetsReycle, we are the 5th best Council in the country when it comes to our combined recycling / compostion rate.
Through the Warwickshire Waste Partnership, all the Councils in Warwickshire have a Municipal Waste Management Strategy for managing waste in Warwickshire until 2020.
Waste Hierarchy
The 'Waste hierarchy' ranks waste disposal options in order of environmental impact. The options towards the top of the pyramid have less impact on the environment and are therefore preferable.
Reduce - Waste reduction means decreasing the amount of waste that we produce. This is the most sustainable option.
Reuse - Waste reuse means using something again, either for its original purpose or for a similar purpose. If you have an unwanted item, someone else may be able to reuse it.
Recycle - Recycling reduces the demand for raw materials by recovering materials from redundant products such as packaging.
Recover Energy - Energy from Waste facilities use waste treatment technologies to turn non-recyclable waste into renewable energy.
Landfill - Landfilling means putting waste back into the ground. It results in the loss of valuable resources and is a costly waste management option, financially and environmentally.
