Sport Relief took place from Saturday 17th to Friday 23rd March 2018, for a week filled with fundraising events. Sport Relief aims to encourage people to be more active whilst raising life-changing money for people across the UK and the world. In 2018, Stratford-on-Avon District Council partnered with Everyone Active at Stratford Leisure Centre to deliver a variety of challenges to raise money to support Sport Relief.
For 2018, Sport Relief challenged the nation to complete at least one billion steps a day, each day from 17th-23rd March. The free Sport Relief app allowed individuals to track their steps and contribute to the daily one billion step target. The app also enabled people to join challenges and donate to Sport Relief. The District was challenged to compete against each other to see who could achieve the most steps over the week! Alongside this, we collectively aimed to complete 7,478,592 steps; the equivalent to 3,541 miles, the distance from Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire to Stratford, Ontario in Canada.
Everyone Active attempted to row the length of the ‘10 Longest Rivers in the UK' on indoor rowing machines. The 10 longest rivers measure a grand total of 1,458miles. Members were encouraged to sign up to the challenge with a Fitness Motivator at Stratford, Southam and Shipston Leisure Centres.
The leisure team at Stratford-on-Avon District Council invited secondary schools in the District to take part in a ‘Virtual Rowing Competition'. Pupils were tasked to compete in teams of maximum 10 to see how far they can row on a single machine in 30 minutes.
Sport Relief is one of the largest fundraising events in the UK, and is one of two events delivered by Comic Relief. Sport Relief's focus is to motivate people to be active no matter what their level of ability, in order to raise money. The money raised by Sport Relief is used by Comic Relief to tackle a wide variety of issues around the world and in the UK. This year rather than one day, Sport Relief wants the country to get involved with a whole week of challenges. For more information regarding Sport Relief follow the link to the Sport Relief website.
In 2016, local heroes from Stratford-upon-Avon walked and ran 1, 3, and 6 miles during the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile to raise life-changing money.
The Stratford Mile raised a total of £3262.94, contributing to the Sport Relief record breaking grand total of £72.5million. The money raised helps disadvantaged people living incredibly tough lives, across the UK and the world's poorest communities
