Junior Para-sports Person Award

Junior Para-sports Person Award

The 2018 joint winners of the Junior Para-sports Person Award is Sophie Evans-Lee, Riding for the Disabled and Ellan Fraser, Bears Wheelchair Basketball Club.

Sophie started Riding in September 2016 after suffering from an Acquired Brain Injury following meningitis and septicaemia in December 2014. In May 2017, she competed for the first time at the RDA Regional Championships. Sophie finished 1st not only in her category but also overall, securing a place in the RDA Nationals at Hartpury in July where she came 5th.

Ellan started playing wheelchair basketball after attending a taster session at Myton Bears Club. It was at the taster session that Ellan found out that she would be eligible to be classified as a disabled wheelchair basketball player, and to play as a disabled player in the BWB National League. Since joining the Bears, Ellan has gone from strength to strength, moving from a junior member of the Bears to being asked to join with the Bears senior team sessions. In August, Ellan was selected to represent the West Midlands in her first try-out for the team. She quickly became an established player that played in the National Junior Basketball Championships. Ellan has also been earmarked by the coaching team at the club for international selection and has also been talked about by members of the national team to be included for future GB training squads.
