At the end of last year Stratford-on-Avon District submitted a bid to the Government's Housing Infrastructure Fund - Marginal Viability Fund for the Long Marston Airfield Garden Village.

The Government announced today, Thursday 1 February that the bid had been successful and awarded the District Council £13.4m to be used for vital site infrastructure measures for Phase 1 of the Long Marston Airfield Garden Village development.

This is the fourth largest grant awarded in the country.

Due to the previous use of the site as an MOD/RAF base the site has significant and unusual cost pressures on infrastructure for the scheme.  These include provision for abnormal land remediation and ordnance removal, treatment of an underground high pressure gas main that crosses the site; bringing a new mains gas supply to the site and improving local road infrastructure.  The grant will go towards the cost of these works and the enabling of Phase 1 of the project on site.

Cllr Chris Saint, Leader of Stratford-on-Avon District Council says: "It is expected that this funding will now improve the viability of the site and in so doing increase the affordable housing proposed."

Cllr Peter Richards, Housing and Infrastructure Portfolio at the District Council says: "This is fantastic news.  The team, comprising the Executive Director, Head of Infrastructure and Transformation Projects, Policy Manager and myself worked together on the bid and are thrilled to have successfully secured this additional money to progress Phase 1 of the Long Marston Airfield Garden Village development."

Background Information

Long Marston Airfield Garden Village is for a sustainable, mixed use, new Garden Village settlement, located on a 205ha site at Long Marston Airfield, a former MoD/RAF base predominantly brownfield site.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government are investing £866m in vital infrastructure projects across England to help get up to 200,000 potential new homes off the ground.  These projects were successful bids to the Marginal Viability Fund - part of the government's £5billion Housing Infrastructure Fund.   Ends
