Alcester Grammar School's new sports hall will be formally opened this Thursday 24 November. Stratford-on-Avon District Council has provided £200,000 towards the new development at the school to ensure local residents are able to use the facilities as a benefit for the community.

It forms part of an overall investment by the District Council of £1m in leisure services in Alcester. £800,000 is being used to support the new development at the Greig Centre, which will provide updated community facilities and a large modern fitness gym and studio.

The school's new sport hall, named the AGS Sports Facility, will provide additional quality sporting opportunities for the communities of Alcester and the surrounding areas. Being on a school site and a dual use facility, community use is programmed for Monday to Friday 6-10pm and all day Saturday and Sunday.

The new facility comprises a four badminton court-sized sports hall, a dance studio, a conference room and tennis courts. Activities available are 5-a-side football, volleyball, badminton, netball, cricket nets, various classes including karate, yoga, combat and aerobics, gymnastics and basketball. Hire of the dance studio and conference room are also available.

The official opening will be by the Mayor of Alcester, Cllr Jim Kenyon, and the Head of Leisure & Local Economy, at Stratford District Council Paul Ogden. The sports hall itself has been open to the school and community use since September.
