Wellesbourne by-election result

Three candidates contested the seat for the Wellesbourne ward for Stratford-on-Avon District Council and Wellesbourne division for Warwickshire County Council yesterday. The by-election followed the death in May of the previous ward member, Anita Macaulay (Cons).  

The result for Stratford District is:          

Priscilla Jean Cook (Liberal Democrat) 804 votes
Laura Susan Main (Conservative) 897 votes elected
John Murray Ritchie (Labour) 197 votes  

The electorate for the Wellesbourne ward is 5312. Turnout for this election was 35.9% with 10 papers rejected.  Turnout for the last contested election at Wellesbourne was 45.33%.  

The result for Warwickshire County Council is:          

David William Johnston (Liberal Democrat) 776 votes
Laura Susan Main (Conservative) 1112 votes elected
John Murray Ritchie (Labour) 227 votes  

The electorate for the Wellesbourne division is 5960. Turnout for this election was 35.6% with 7 papers rejected.  Turnout for the last contested election at county level for Wellesbourne was 70.59% (held the same time as the Parliamentary Election).  

The political make-up of the district council's 53 seats is now:          
Conservatives - 30          
Liberal Democrats  - 19          
Independents - 3
Vacancies - 1 (Alcester by-election to be held on 24 August)  

The political make-up of the county council's 62 seats is now:          
Conservatives - 27          
Labour - 23          
Liberal Democrats  - 11          
Independent - 1
