Who present on the recreation ground in Southam on Saturday night, 9th July, would have known that it was a small meeting on a dark January evening that would lead to one of the brightest events Southam has ever seen?

The event was a huge success judging by the laughter and happiness apparent in every corner of the park.  People were unanimous in their praise with comments along the lines of "It's what Southam has been crying out for" and "I wasn't sure what to expect but I am so happy to be here".  This sentiment was reflected in the turnout "The number of people in attendance exceeded our wildest expectations" said Mike Stanley of the organising committee.  "It was wonderful to see people coming together; such a wide variety of people, those who are new to the town and people who have lived their whole lives there, young and old, friends and family.  The people of Southam showed us on Saturday that our community spirit is both alive and kicking" he added.

The musical line up was organised largely by local musician, Nick Chimes.  Nick had sources local acts with a wide range of musical backgrounds and his band, Party Express, played the final set before a stunning firework finale wowed onlookers.   All the performers were local to Southam  which meant this really was an event for the community by the community.

The event was free to local residents as a result of generous fundraising and business sponsorship, which was secured by the committee.  Julia Aratoon, Area Coordinator said: "We were very lucky to have the support of local businesses who provided in-kind and financial support which made it possible to hold the party in the park as free community event.  We are writing personally to thank the huge number of private sponsors who we have worked with.  We would also like to pass on gratitude to our main funders: Southam Town Council, Stratford District Council and Awards for All."

Whilst many people chose to bring their own picnics, catering was available on site from local caterers. Also on offer was hair braiding, face painting and an opportunity to win a helicopter ride for two in a prize draw - the winner or which is said to be delighted.

As a result of the party's success, the small organising committee would like to arrange a similar event in 2006, and are currently seeking people to join them as volunteer committee members or stewards.  If you would like to be part of next year's event, or if you were there and  would just like to tell us what you thought, please email southampartyinthepark@warwickshire.gov.uk or phone Julia Aratoon on 01789 260103.  Let's see if we can build on the success of this year to make next year's event an even bigger and better affair!
