Naming and Renaming Streets and Properties

Street Naming and Numbering

The responsibility for street naming and numbering of new developments within the Stratford-on-Avon District Council's area is vested in the Council under the Public Health Act 1925, Sections 17-19. However in many instances the responsibility for naming has been delegated to Town/Parish Councils where they have expressed a wish to carry out the function. The issue of allotting postal numbers is the responsibility of the District Council. The issuing of postcodes is wholly the responsibility of Royal Mail.

A leaflet entitled 'Street Naming and Numbering', which provides further information can be downloaded from the links on the right.

For further information on street naming and numbering please contact the GIS team on 01789 260338 or by email at egov@stratford-dc.gov.uk or by fax on 01789 260777.

Altering the Name of Your Property or Naming Your Property

Altering the name of a property or giving a property a name is the prerogative of the property owner. The District Council holds no powers in these matters and as such can only advise.

However, we do need to know what your property address is, for our own records and for nation-wide address databases, such as Royal Mail Postcodes, the new Government Land and Property Gazetteer and Ordnance Survey.

We will also check our records to make sure that the chosen name is not duplicated with any other named property within the locality. You will appreciate that to have two properties of the same or very similar names within the same street or road and within the same postcode could cause confusion when deliveries are made.

If the property has been allocated a postal number and street these must still exist within your address.

In respect of changing the name of a property you are moving to we will normally only accept change at or after completion of purchase. We are only able to amend addresses on the written request of the owner of a property, so please confirm your ownership when writing in.

A leaflet entitled 'Altering the Name of your Property', which provides further information can be downloaded from the links on the right.

The leaflet outlines the procedure necessary to register or change the name of a property. We would draw your attention to one minor amendment to the procedure:

On the back page of the leaflet reference is made to us sending you 'a list of names and addresses or organisations whom we suggest you also notify'. Unfortunately we no longer do this due to the increase in those companies providing utilities and other services.

The list of those we do notify regarding any change has been increased. In addition to all services of Stratford-on-Avon DC, Royal Mail Postcodes, Warwickshire Police and Ordnance Survey we now also notify the following:

  • Land Registry
  • Warwickshire Fire and Rescue
  • Warwickshire Ambulance
  • Warwickshire County Council, Planning & Transportation
  • The local sorting office (via Stratford-upon-Avon sorting office)

For further information on street naming and numbering please contact the Land Charges manager on 01789 260344 or by email at landcharges@stratford-dc.gov.uk or by fax on 01789 260860.
