Parking around the District has had a big change. Under the grand title of 'Decriminalised Parking Enforcement', a new scheme started on 4th October 2004 aimed at reducing congestion and improving the environment for everyone.
Stratford-on-Avon District Council has taken over the responsibility for parking on the streets, which the police currently look after, as well as Council off-street car parks. In partnership with Warwickshire County Council, which is the highway authority, charges and time restrictions for parking have been introduced on a selected number of streets in Stratford-upon-Avon, and these are being enforced by a new team of parking officers. Their role is to free up the traffic flow in the town centre, and watch over a new residents' parking permit scheme where illegal parking in residential areas is a real problem for householders.
Following a consultation exercise, local opinion identified parking and traffic congestion in Stratford Town as a major issue which needs to be resolved. As police forces are now placing lower priorities on parking, and with greater calls on their budgets, the government introduced new legislation to allow local councils to take over parking enforcement.
The scheme is being piloted in the Stratford District, which will then be rolled out across the whole of the County.
