Design Award 2004

Thank you to everyone who sent in nominations for well-designed buildings, extensions or conversion schemes that were completed between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2003 for the District Council's Design Award 'Celebration of Excellence 2004'.

Thirty four nominations were received for the 2004 scheme, with a panel of judges whittling entries down from eight shortlisted sites and then choosing two winners.

• The Moat House at Dorsington comprises an extension to a Grade II listed house by architect Glen Howells, the planning agent/architect was Granville Lewis and the work carried out by Color estates Ltd. The judges said it was 'exceptional, a bold, brave statement with minimal impact upon the historic fabric. Its design and finish was also excellent'.

• The conversion of a workshop and studio from within the former mill buildings complex at Clifford Mill, Clifford Chambers to office/studio and commercial premises was designed by Frame International Ltd, and the work carried out by John Harris & Sons. According to the judges, it was 'an excellent restrained contemporary addition, with maximum use of existing buildings, and simple, effective detailing and landscape'.

The independent panel of judges consisted of representatives from the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Landscape Institute, the Warwickshire and West Midlands Association of Local Councils, the Royal Town Planning Institute, the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), and district councilor Richard Adams (portfolio holder for planning & transport).

The Celebration of Excellence 2004 award ceremony was held at Elizabeth House on 1 October 2004. The then Council Chairman Juliet Short presented the awards.
