The main responsibility of Planning Policy is the production of plans that control future development in the District – how much is needed and where it should take place – and protect our environment and heritage.
The Development Plan for Stratford District comprises:
- The West Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy - January 2008
- A number of saved policies from the Warwickshire Structure Plan which has expired.
- The Stratford-on-Avon District Local Plan Review expired on 14 July 2009. However, most of the policies and proposals it contained have been ‘saved' and can continue to be applied. The original Local Plan and the notification letter on behalf of the Secretary of State, together with the schedule of saved policies can be viewed from the link above.
West Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy Following a recent High Court judgement, the Regional Spatial Strategy has been re-instated as a part of the District's Development Plan with immediate effect.
The Government has stated that its intention remains to abolish Regional Spatial Strategies.
The various WMRSS documents can still be viewed on the West Midlands Regional Assembly archive website.
The Development Plan is supported by a range of supplementary guidance produced by the District Council. This is particularly useful for prospective applicants and developers.
Under the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, the District Council is now preparing a Local Development Framework. This will look different to the old-style Local Plan as it will consist of a series of documents, each one having a different scope and purpose. But it will have the same objective of setting planning policy for the District and providing the basis for considering planning applications.
The first document being prepared is known as the Core Strategy. This will establish the long-term vision for the District, the key objectives and the policies for achieving them. The latest situation on the Core Strategy can be viewed from the link above.
A list of current planning policy publications and related documents produced or commissioned by the District Council can be downloaded for information.
Local planning policies have to be consistent with national legislation and guidance, including Planning Policy Guidance Notes (PPGs) and Planning Policy Statements (PPSs). These can be viewed on the Communities and Local Government website.
The Planning Portal is also a useful source of information. This is a national one-stop shop service about the planning system.
