Do I need planning permission to use part of a field as part of my garden?

Planning permission is required for change of use of agricultural land, paddocks or orchards, whether currently in use or vacant, to residential garden land. Draft Local Plan Review policy CTY.1 provides the general policy context. Within the Green Belt, policy PR.2 sets out a general presumption against this type of development. Government policy documents PPG2 and PPS7 can be seen at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister website. The fee for an application for any change of use is £265 (see Fee Calculation Sheet)
