Do I need planning permission for work to the roof of my house?

You do not normally need to apply for planning permission to re-roof your house or to insert roof lights or skylights. However, there are some special rules which govern extensions to the roof.

You are likely to require a planning application in order to increase the height of the roof or change the shape of the roof.

We recommend that you fill out a Householders Enquiry form and post it to the Council. We will then advise you in writing whether you need planning permission, or other consents, for your proposal.

You must obtain the separate approval of the County Council Highways Department if a new driveway would cross a pavement or road verge.

Building Regulations approval is usually required for alterations to roofs.
