This guidance on the installation of solar panels and wind turbines refers to single family dwellinghouses. The term 'dwellinghouse' does not include residential flats, whether in purpose-built blocks or in converted houses or other buildings.
In most cases it will be necessary to give notification of the works under the Building Regulations.
A solar panel on a roof may require Building Regulations approval, depending on the size and load that the unit will place on the existing roof. You will also need to show how the unit is fixed to the roof structure, in particular the means of holding down the panel, together with the proposed alterations to any existing heating or hot water system.
A photo-voltaic cell system on a roof may also require Building Regulation approval, depending on the area of the roof covered and how the power they provide is integrated into the existing electrical system.
The same principles apply for the installation of wind turbines on a house. In most cases a Building Regulations application would be necessary as the size, weight and force exerted on fixing-points would need to be considered.
