In September 2000 the District Council adopted, as supplementary planning guidance (SPG), comprehensive design guidance for developers. Its central focus is maintaining the distinctive, local qualities of the District.
Stratford-on-Avon District Council expects all proposals for new works to be of high quality. Designers and applicants are strongly advised to consult the Stratford District Design Guide at the earliest opportunity, as they will be expected to justify their design proposals.
The existing District Design Guide has now been used as Supplementary Planning Guidance since 2001. Although the design principles in the document remain relevant, it is important that key guidance documents are reviewed periodically, and updates adopted where necessary.
Stratford-on-Avon District Council is currently undertaking work to update the District Design Guide. As well as being a general update to the Design Guide, it is an opportunity to take the ideas of the original guide forward and evolve them further with the benefit of nearly ten years of experience of using the guide in practice.
An update to the District Design Guide would need to be adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) and would form part of the Local Development Framework. Its adoption would be subject to a public consultation process and a Sustainability Appraisal. The progress of this project will be updated in due course.
