Historic Buildings - Energy Advice

This page offers sources of advice to owners of listed buildings or other older buildings on how to reduce carbon emissions/improve energy efficiency whilst still protecting the character of the buildings and the appearance of the historic environments in the District.

Stratford-on-Avon district has not yet prepared its own locally specific advice but there is national guidance and examples of good practice from other councils.

National Guidance

The National Planning Policy Framework includes sections on Conserving and Enhancing the Historic Environment and Requiring Good Design.

Climate Change and Your Home is an interactive web portal from English Heritage designed specifically to help you understand more about the potential impacts of climate change and ways to save energy if you own or manage an older home.

It includes the document Energy Conservation in Traditional Buildings which looks at reducing enery consunption in traditionally constructed homes.

The Historic Environment - Local Management (HELM) website provides links to advice on climate change and managing and protecting the historic environment including policies on renewable and low carbon energy. It also covers Building Regulation advice.

Good Practice

Please note that the documents and advice listed below are specific to the Councils which have produced them. Before making any changes to a listed building or adding external devices to a building in a conservation area please contact us to check if you need permission.
