The Heritage and Design team at the Council are undertaking a programme to review the 75 Conservation Areas designated within the District. This extensive programme will take a number of years to complete.
The reviews are part of an ongoing work programme being carried out by the Council to enable the Planning Development team to determine whether planning applications preserve or enhance the character or appearance of Conservation Areas.
For further information on the implications of Conservation Area status please refer to the Conservation Area section of the website.
Consultation on Draft Appraisals
When draft appraisals are produced, these are made available for public consultation. Residents will be asked to consider issues such as whether the current Conservation Area boundaries are appropriate, which structures, buildings and streets are most valued or considered most important and which places could be improved and how.
The public consultation provides an opportunity to share information and gather feedback and we urge residents and visitors of the particular settlement to play their part in the protection and enhancement of the Conservation Area.
The purpose of public consultation is:
- To ensure that the document produced is as accurate and comprehensive as possible;
- To benefit from local knowledge and experience, this may relate to the history of the area or in the identification of issues;
- To ensure all are working towards the same objectives;
- To increase understanding of what conservation area designation means and encourage local involvement in the conservation of the area; and
- To ensure that everyone has a say on the management of their local area.
