Helping our Children to be Fit for Life 2012 and beyond

Released on 10 June 2010

Stratford-on-Avon District Council and South Warwickshire Dietetic Service are working in partnership with Stratford-upon-Avon College performing Arts' Department to take the message of the importance of healthy eating and regular physical activity to 47 primary schools across the District reaching in the region of 10,000 children.

Fast foods, high calorie snacks and large portions all mean it is easy to take in more energy than we need.  Most of us have more food than we need and much of it is high in calories than the human body was originally designed to cope with and obesity is now becoming one of the most serious medical problems of the Western world.

There is increasing national concern over the rising levels of obesity in children because of poor diet and lack of physical activity.  That is why this year's Theatre in Education tour aims to promote healthy eating and the importance of keeping active through regular physical activity is being promoted in primary schools across the District as part of this.

So far, 110 students from Stratford-upon-Avon performing Arts' Department have learnt the messages of healthy eating and physical and are creating different shows as part of their Theatre in Education project and work experience. This opportunity provides a significant contribution towards the college attaining Grade 1 status in performing arts.

Given the rising levels of childhood obesity, this is a significant project which aims at getting important information to children and through them to their parents and carers.  Students delivering these messages through performing arts provide good opportunities for local colleges to give a memorable and tangible experience for all involved.
