Council backs Cycle Week

Stratford-on-Avon District Council supported "National Bike to Work" week last week as one of a number of ways the Council is involved in carbon reduction initiatives and the Council's Corporate Aim of developing sustainable communities.  

Participating officers and Councillors either cycled from the Greenway to Elizabeth House or used the Park and Ride. In addition, there was a lunchtime trip out to Milcote from Elizabeth House.  

The Council is committed to minimising the environmental impact of Council activities and services, and will be developing more green travel opportunities for Councillors and Staff over the coming months, including car sharing, more cycling events and home working.  

Cllr Peter Barnes cycled in from his ward in Welford and Cllr Mike Brain cycled the whole route from Long Marston, in his ward of Quinton into Stratford, and then back.  

Cllr Tony Dixon, Chairman of the Council's Environmental Sustainability Panel, said "Those who took part in this event thoroughly enjoyed the experience, proving that doing something about climate change doesn't have to be painful!  The health benefits were noted too, but off -set by some wonderful refreshments at the Milcote Railway Carriage, which were well earned!"  

The event was also supported by Stratford Bike hire, giving staff without bikes a chance to hire one for the day.
