Get ready for smoking ban

With not long to go before the smoking ban in England Stratford-on-Avon District Council is urging businesses and residents to be ready for the change in law.  

From 1 July, it will be illegal to smoke in all enclosed public places including public conveniences, public houses, restaurants and hotels, all workplaces (smoking rooms are prohibited) and public and work vehicles, such as taxis, tractors and delivery vans.   

Licensees, managers and anyone in charge of smoke free premises will need to display "no smoking" signs and ensure nobody smokes in these places.  

Environmental Health Enforcement Officers will be able to issue on-the-spot fines of £50 to smokers who flout the law and take court action against businesses who let their patrons smoke inside.

"It is important that those in charge of premises covered by the new law are aware of their responsibilities and make sure they and their staff are ready to apply it and the District Council has been holding a number of presentations with local businesses to help them prepare for this new legislation," says Cllr Simon Jackson, Environment Portfolio Holder.  

"It is crucial too that District residents know where they will and will not be able to smoke ahead of the law coming in.  For example they may not be aware that smoking in taxis will not be permitted after 1 July."
