The Beautiful Game Supports the Mayor's Appeal.

Released on 7 July 2010

Forget the World Cup Final in Johannesburg; the most exiting football match of the year is taking place in Nuneaton!

To raise funds for the Mayor's appeal, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council (NBBC) will be taking on their counterparts from Stratford on Avon District Council (SDC) at Nuneaton Town's Triton Showers Community Arena.

The Mayor himself, Cllr Don Navarro, has signed up to play for NBBC and will be leading from the front in an effort to bag some all-important goals.

The game, which will be overseen by a fully qualified referee, will kick off at 6.30pm on Thursday 15 July and both teams are up for the challenge.  In the last 18 months NBBC have played against Rugby Borough Council, both home and away, and lost both times.  SDC have suffered an identical outcome against Warwick District Council.

Members of the public are welcome to come and watch the game and there is no charge for admission but a donation to the Mayor's appeal is welcome.  All players will be making a contribution to the appeal as well.

The Mayor, Cllr Don Navarro, said: "I am, along with my team-mates, looking forward to the game.  I'm sure it will be good natured but competitive as the winning team will get to take away bragging rights.  The real winner on the night will be my appeal charity, the Special Care Baby Unit at the George Eliot Hospital.  What better way to raise funds?  I hope we get a good turnout from the public too."

Rachel Gray, organiser of the SDC team, said: "Stratford District Council is looking forward to the game against Nuneaton and Bedworth and we should be on equal par!  We are taking the game seriously and have even managed to convince our Chief Executive to play.  It's fair to say we have a few tricks up our sleeve to deal with anything NBBC can throw at us!"
