This footage illustrates the concerns we have over the refuse and recycling fleet operating in ice and snow. Once a vehicle of this size starts to slide, there is very little that can be done to avoid collisions with vehicles, pedestrians or buildings. Given that the vehicles are constantly starting and stopping, ice and snow on the roads can also stop vehicles from moving again if they are on a slope.
As well as the direct risk to both the public and the refuse crews, many areas that may appear to be passable are accessed along routes with hills or larger quantities of snow and ice that make it impossible for the vehicles to get through to certain areas. Please have patience if the weather is causing disruption to the services in your area and we will look to resume services at the earliest opportunity.

it's only the wagons we are missing, we already do everything except tip it in ourselves. Dustmen used to fetch the bin (metal ones) carry them to the wagon, dispose of the refuse and return the bin to its rightful place. Nowadays they can't even shut the lid, when they turn up!

Has anyone out there heard of snow chains??

As most refuse collection vehicles don't go very fast maybe, just maybe they could be fitted with winter tyres all year! Or look at Europe and buy snow chains. As long as replacement vehicles are specified with the same wheel dimensions the chains would last for years.

IN SUPPORT OF VERDANT! I don't know why all this fuss is being made in the first place! The collections have been disrupted by weather that is not the norm, and therefore why should tax payers money be spent on items that are unlikely to be used for potentially years, and yet would still need to be stored and maintained. Other parts of the world are more suited to this weather and so are more likely to have the equipment. Instead of moaning about it, do what i did - take some of your recycling and waste to your nearest tip/recycling centre and be done with it. The problem nowadays is we expect EVERYTHING to be done for us, please can we start to sort out our own problems (ie it's our waste not the councils for a starter!) without simply moaning about them. I for one would not wish any harm to anyone working in the recent conditions, or any harm to be caused to anyone or their property. I fully support the revised timetables and also the fact that they have tried their best to keep us informed during ever changing conditions.
