Gritting latest update

Released on 13 January 2010

Warwickshire County Council's gritters are battling their way through the snow this morning to try and keep the County' traffic on the move.

Gritters last night spread 130 tonnes of grit on all 1,790km of Warwickshire's primary road network, and the gritters have been in operation again on the primary network from 7am.

Motorists are advised not to travel unless they have to in the snow conditions. The Met Office is forecasting the snow to turn to sleet during the morning, and there then to be a freeze tonight, creating treacherous travelling conditions.

Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council's Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "There have been suggestions in the media this morning that Warwickshire's roads have not been gritted. This is not the case. Warwickshire's gritting crews have been working through the night and into this morning to try and keep the primary road network clear.

"We are monitoring weather conditions in close liaison with the Met Office.

"We have adequate grit supplies to deal with this latest snowfall, and we are expecting another delivery of salt today.

"For the latest information on travel and other services during this period of weather visit www.warwickshire.gov.uk/snow

"I would also like to remind people of the hard work going on behind the scenes to try and keep Warwickshire's roads clear. We have gritter drivers heading out several times a day, often in the early hours of the morning. Hopefully everyone will continue to heed the advice of the Met Office and emergency services and only travel if they have to, and if they do have to, to take care."
