Beat the Winter Blues AND the Credit Crunch

Released on 21 November 2008

The best way to combat the winter blues is to keep warm and stay healthy and walking is an ideal way to do this especially if you do it regularly throughout the winter months.

With this in mind, Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Active Community Officers have organised weekly Track Walking sessions, where you can bring the family, friends or meet new people at the Athletic Track, Stratford High School every Wednesday.

Track walking is aimed at any ability, any speed, for as long as you like between 5.30pm and 7pm, and it's absolutely FREE.

Serious walkers can take this opportunity to train or if you fancy a social date with friends for a chat, take advantage of this safe, friendly and well-lit evening facility while taking the evening air.

John Insell, 69, joined Track Walking from its very first event and has been coming every week since then. John had to reluctantly give up running nearly 20 years ago due to various health problems including knee trouble. Track Walking sessions encouraged him to start a walking programme that was structured and would allow him to be self-disciplined in his efforts.

"I hadn't got that much time to spare so I wanted to go along and see how many laps I could do in the short amount of time I had. I was delighted that I managed 16 laps (the equivalent of 4 miles!)." says John, who is now an inspiration to other track walkers.

"I think track walking is a brilliant idea as it's such a safe all-weather surface and you have the support of Stratford District Council's Active Community Officers so anyone can do it whether they just want to come and stroll round for a lap or two or try to keep up with me!"
