Over 100,000 people live in private sector housing in the District, either as tenants of private landlords or as owner occupiers (with or without a mortgage) in their own homes.
In order to maintain its proper understanding of local housing circumstances, the District Council commissioned cpc Ltd to undertake a comprehensive survey of the condition of private housing.
Over 1,200 randomly selected properties across the District were surveyed, and the household was interviewed in most cases. Combining the data from this survey with standard models of house design allowed reliable conclusions to be drawn about the key features of private housing in the District. From the information gained from the interviews, it has also been possible to build a general picture of households living in private sector housing.
The survey report (produced in November 2009) - available to download from this page - presents a profile of the housing stock and a generalised profile of residents before explaining the survey results on:
- The Decent Homes Standard
- Category 1 hazards
- Disrepair
- Modern facilities
- Thermal comfort
- Cost of repair
- Energy performance of homes and the incidence of fuel poverty.
For each factor, the report splits the overall results into those for two geographical areas (Stratford-upon-Avon town and the Rural Area), and into those relating to owner occupiers or people who rent their home.
Chapter 11 of the report presents the findings of a separate survey of the condition of the considerable number of park mobile homes in the District.
