The Rent Express Scheme

The Rent Express Scheme, which is run by the Council's Housing Advice Team, can help people to access private rented accommodation if they cannot afford the rent in advance and cash deposit.

The Council can help eligible households with up to one month's rent in advance, normally up to one month's deposit guarantee, and up to one month's rent guarantee.

The Deposit Guarantee is offered in place of the usual cash deposit required by most landlords and letting agents but provides the same level of security to landlords.

The Rent Guarantee protects landlords where rent arrears are outstanding at the end of the tenancy.

Prospective tenants who want to use the Scheme will be eligible to apply if they are:

  • Resident in or have a strong local connection to Stratford-on-Avon District (normally 6 months residence and
  • On a low income or in receipt of benefits and
  • Homeless or threatened with homelessness

In order to be considered for the Rent in Advance payment, people must be eligible to receive full Housing Benefit. Eligibility for the Deposit Guarantee is limited to those who are either in receipt of a means tested benefit or are on low incomes, and so would qualify for some Housing Benefit.
