Waste Reduction

Waste reduction (or waste minimisation) is at the top of the waste hierarchy. The less waste we produce, the fewer natural resources we are using and the less waste we have to dispose of. It can save money too.

Some suggestions to reduce waste

Smarter shopping

Love food, hate waste

Did you know £12 billion worth of food is wasted by households in the UK every year? An average household could save up to £50 on their monthly shopping bill.

The national campaign Love Food Hate Waste aims to help us all to reduce the amount of food waste we throw away. The website contains tips on longer-life storage, food preparation and even recipe ideas from celebrity chefs for left-overs.

Real Nappies

By the time a baby has been potty-trained, they will have used between 4,000 and 6,000 nappies. Real nappies or 'Smart Nappies' not only reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill but can save you £100's, especially if you use the nappies again for a second child.

Even if you are not able to switch completely, any reduction in the number of disposable nappies you throw away helps.

Warwickshire County Council's Cottton on to Cotton Nappies campaign provides information on washable, reuseable nappies.

If you would like further information or support with using Real Nappies, you may also like to visit the Go Real website or phone 0845 850 0606.

Stop junk mail

Register with the Mail Preference Service or call 0845 703 4599 to reduce the amount of unwanted junk mail through your door - your name will be removed from up to 95% of Direct Mail Lists.

Reusable shopping bags

Use cloth shopping bags or choose the 'bag for life' schemes operating at most supermarkets to reduce the amount of plastic carrier bags that end up going to landfill.

Some waste is unavoidable. However, things you no longer need may be suitable for reuse or recycling.
