Blue lias stone has been quarried in Stockton, Southam and Long Itchington, for more than a century. The nave and aisles of St Michael's Church are built of local stone. The church, which once belonged to Hertford priory, has been much altered; parts of the chancel date back to the 14th century and the sandstone tower is 15th century.
