Stratford-upon-Avon - a vibrant and unique market town
Stratford is unique because it is the birthplace of William Shakespeare and vibrant as the town attracts 3.5 million visitors a year. Now a multi-million pound initiative is underway to enable Stratford to meet the challenges demanded of a town that holds a position of global importance.
The aim of the World Class Stratford initiative is to transform the town's image in a variety of ways and enable the town to truly fulfil its role as one of the world's most iconic locations
The World Class Stratford vision is to ensure Stratford-upon-Avon provides an excellent quality of life and a healthy economic environment for its residents, businesses and visitors by:
- Working with partners to improve traffic movement and create an effective public transport interchange for the town
- Ensuring an adequate supply of affordable housing
- Improving the public accessible areas and how they connect within Stratford in order to enhance the visitor experience and create an environment that will support business growth and job creation within the town
- Identifying suitable development that is sustainable, mixed-use, distinctive, high quality, attractive and reduces the need to travel
- Developing Stratford-upon-Avon as a centre of excellence for a range of functions
- Ensuring Stratford-upon-Avon remains as one of the country's prime cultural destinations be enhancing the quality and variety of the visitor experience to world class standards
- Making Stratford-upon-Avon the most significant and rewarding place for experiencing Shakespeare's legacy and genius
- Strengthening the perception of Stratford-upon-Avon's unique qualities and attractiveness by seeking to achieve World Heritage Site status
- Improving the ways we conserve, interpret and present Stratford-upon-Avon's historical, architectural and landscape heritage
- Identifying and maintaining a strong sense of place and local distinctiveness in all new development
- Co-ordinating new developments and public spaces in order to create a distinctive whole, which is integrated into the existing fabric of the town
